Desert Tour & Drum Lessons

On this trip you will have the opportunity not just to experience the vastness and beauty of the Moroccan desert but to learn how to play the traditional Moroccan drums. Instructed by a Moroccan musician in the uniquely peaceful atmosphere of the Sahara desert, you will be taught each day to a style that combines both the desert’s traditional Berber culture and modern sound inspirations, mixing reggae rhythms with the blues of the desert. You will furthermore be offered the best chance to experience a short and very unique stay in the North African Sahara desert.

How does the trip look like?

You will embark from Merzouga in southern Morocco onto a desert trip quite unlike anything you have ever experienced. Once you arrived you will find everything ready and prepared to start your desert trip.

On our trek through the sand desert, passing through a sea of dunes of up to 150m in height, you will be accompanied by experienced local guides. Pack camels will carry our equipment and provisions, making for a safer and more comfortable hike. Climbing a giant dune will allow you to understand why Erg Chebbi is called the “Sea of Sands”. At nightfall, a well-equipped lonesome desert camp (consisting of three comfortable Berber tents with mattresses, linen, toilets, a restaurant, and a kitchen) awaits us after watching the sun set over golden dunes.  You will enjoy a Moroccan dinner prepared by our Berber chef under the most amazing night sky. Evening fades with some stories about the Berber music culture and a first session of playing the Moroccan drums seated around the camp fire before you fall asleep in the calming silence of the desert.

After seeing the sun rise and having a lovely prepared breakfast being surrounded only by huge dunes and the sunny sky, you will enjoy your first drum session being taught individually by a Moroccan musician.
After lunch we will take you to encounter a nomad family meeting friendly and hospitable people that will grant you an authentic insight into Berber and nomad culture and lifestyle while enjoying a glas of Berber Whiskey with them.
Once returned back to the camp you will enjoy another session of playing the drums accompanied by the beginning sun set before you enjoy your delicious freshly prepared dinner. Sitting around the camp fire we create our own special sounds while listening to the myths and stories about the history and culture of the music in the desert. Without the light pollution of more densely populated regions, you will be able to see stars and planets in a breathtaking star show that few places on earth can hope to match.

After experiencing the sunrise and another glas of Berber Whiskey you will be back in the hotel. You can take a shower there and enjoy a fortifying breakfast overlooking the desert one last time before making yourself ready to depart for any of your chosen ongoing adventure.
